Adult Swim Released the Last Trailer of Junji Ito's Masterpiece Uzumaki: Get Ready to be Horrified
Junji Ito is probably the most famous author of horror manga in the world.
He has gained worldwide popularity in the realm of manga with his unsettling and chilling drawings, accompanied by incredibly imaginative stories and a masterful narrative skill.
Throughout his three decades of work, he has published numerous volumes such as "Tomie" [富江], "Gyo" [ギョ], and "Fragments of Horror" [魔の断片, Ma no Kakera]. Among these, Adult Swim chose "Uzumaki" [うずまき] to create an anime adaptation based on the manga of the same name.
The manga, released as a series of episodes between 1998 and 1999, is set in the imaginary town of Kurozu-cho, where the inhabitants are afflicted by a strange curse that revolves around spirals. One by one, each resident becomes entangled in the spiral's nature until they are consumed by it. Kirie Goshima and her boyfriend Shuichi Saito try to understand what is happening, attempting not to get involved, but things seem to spiral out of control, and the two's hopes dwindle with each passing page.
One of the key features that characterizes all of Itō's works is the extreme attention to detail and the obsession with meticulously depicting scenes. Every spiral, every object, every figure drawn in his panels is flawless down to the smallest detail. The symbol of the spiral represents the infinite and therefore the incomprehensible, leaving an aura of unsolved mystery throughout the story.
From the recently released trailer, it can be seen that the American animation production company Adult Swim aims to preserve Itō's narrative style and illustrations, successfully animating them with a realistic flair.
The anime went into development hell for a few years after it was initially announced in 2019. Hiroshi Nagahama, the anime's director, explains how the pandemic negatively influenced the project's development, but now the wait has come to an end. Prepare to be soon terrified by the grotesque world envisioned by Junji Itō!
