Bomb Rush Cyberfunk – The Spiritual Successor We Have Been Waiting For
You may look at this and think you have seen it before: the cell-shaded graphics, the bumping soundtrack, the streets-inspired ambience.
This electric jolt of nostalgia you’re feeling now is likely because you have played Jet Set Radio. Unfortunately, this is not the long-awaited sequel you may have thought it was, but this isn’t a bad thing. Instead, this is a love letter to Jet Set Radio and acts as the spiritual successor of the game that changed it all for us. It’s safe to say that we can’t wait.
Developed by Team Reptile, Bomb Rush Cyberpunk sees you skating, grinding, riding, and boosting your way through a metropolis as you tag up the streets. The ultra-fluid and visually exhilarating gameplay has you seamlessly hopping from rails to rooftops racking up points by performing tricks and stunts. Like a mash-up of Tony Hawk Pro Skater and Jet Set Radio, the game borrows the best bits of both and stirs them together to create this love letter to y2k gaming.
Undeniably the graphics for Bomb Rush Cyberpunk are also one of the key things that remind us about Jet Set Radio. The cell-shaded visuals pop out the screen like digital graffiti and invite us into a vivid world of vibrancy. Alongside this, the music also seems to be a big focus much like its Sega counterpart.
Although, this is not a copy and paste, but rather an updated and more modern take on a classic. Instead of just rollerblades, players can be seen skateboarding and BMXing to add more diversity and versatility to the gameplay. A booster pack can also be seen to reach new heights when tagging up buildings.
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk takes a games DNA that was created 22 years ago, adds a fresh glossy coat of paint to it, brings in new innovative gameplay mechanics, and gives to us in 2022 whilst retaining the charm and style that we all know and love from Jet Set Radio. Announced in 2020, the game has been eagerly anticipated now for over 2 years. With a release set for 2023 on both Steam and the Nintendo Switch, fans are ready to finally get their new and updated Jet Set fix.
