Death Is Only the Beginning: GANTZ

GANTZ was serialized from 2000 to 2013 in Weekly Young Jump, making up 37 volumes.

GANTZ features tons of violence, action, and sex, and a story that goes way beyond just a graphic manga.

GANTZ starts off with Kei Kurono, the protagonist, in a subway station. He notices Kato, his childhood friend whom he hasn't seen for years next to him. Shortly after, a drunk man falls onto the train tracks, and Kato jumps down to try and save him. Although his mind tells him not to, Kei ends up jumping down too, to help Kato get the drunkard off the tracks. In a typical manga, they would succeed in saving the man, but GANTZ is no typical manga. The two end up getting run over, beheaded, and their body parts flying all over the station. The main character is dead.

But don’t worry, this is no spoiler. Just the beginning. Kei and Kato wake up in a mysterious apartment room, with a large black ball and a few other people who have supposedly died as well.

Confused, the bunch begin to introduce themselves, but the black ball interrupts them by shooting open & revealing an array of weapons. Members begin to get teleported to different locations outside of the room, and this is only the beginning to the crazy series of events that Kei & the other dead are about to experience.

The characters, the aliens, the fighting, the amount of details that goes into each frame is next level. Although lots of CGI is used, some things like the robots and suits couldn’t be recreated by the staff, so Oku hand drew them. But they were so well drawn that many readers thought the only hand-drawn things in the whole manga were the faces, which Oku mentions made him a little sad. He also mentions that he is a big fan of big boobs, which you could probably tell if you read the manga.
