Health And Hygiene In A Capsule: The Sanyo Pavilion At Osaka Expo 70
The Expo 70 in Osaka was one of the biggest and most attended Expos of all time.
Within the six months, the number of visitors reached 64,218,770, and it would take 40 years for this record to be surpassed by the Shanghai Expo in 2010. 77 countries participated in the event whose theme was
"Progress and Harmony for Mankind."
With many pavilions showcasing items or situations of the future, one of the companies that showed the most futuristic inventions was Sanyo, a Japanese electronics company.
Its pavilions theme was "Heart of Japan" and on an area of 3,350 m2, they tried to emphasize the harmony and elegance in Japanese architecture. A highlight was the "pond of peace" that contained water sent in by pen pals from all over the globe.
One of the inventions was the "Ultrasonic bath." A two-meter high machine that was supposed to replace the manual process of washing your body. The idea was to wash, massage, and dry the user in a 15-minute procedure. To begin, the capsule was filled with water and a massage bath, and the user was cleaned via ultrasonic technology.
After a two-minute washing time followed by a five-minute drying process, ultraviolet light was supposed to kill the last bacterias. Up to this one mystery stays: How are you supposed to wash your head?
Next to the "Ultrasonic bath" a "Health Capsule" was presented. It featured a colour television receiver, TV telephone, stereo set, and a liquor cabinet.
