Jean “MŒBIUS” Giraud: His Influence and Legacy

Jean Giraud was a French artist, cartoonist and writer who worked in the tradition of bandes dessinées (French comic books)

The stylistic schizophrenic artist created the commercially successful Western-Cowboy comic “Blueberry” under his nickname Gir, while artistically exploring the realms of science-fiction under his alias Mœbius.
He worked closely together with Alejandro Jodorowsky and was a direct influence for artists like Katsuya Terada, Katsuhiro Otomo (AKIRA) and Hayao Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli).

The Sabukaru Network teamed up with the Tokyo-based artist Johnny Terror to from now on give you a glimpse into his inspirational world, universe and the artists that shaped him on his way to Tokyo and beyond.

“Jean Giraud is amongst the most influential and complex artists of his time. I’m using the present tense because he continues to exist through his books and his influence on pop culture and art today. He revolutionised the comic world and also showed that illustration, comics and fine art are linked together like an iron chain. Unbreakable. He is like a train that keeps on going and going. Even death wasn’t able to stop that metaphysical train.”
