OLD FUTURE by Franz Freitag
After my first visit to Japan two years ago, it was very clear that I had to come back.
Back to the place where it all started; where I fell in love with photography and where I feel more inspired than anywhere else in the world.
Here we are, just me and my camera. I was planning on going on a world tour, but I’m stuck in Tokyo.
That’s ok, I want to be stuck here.
Rather than visiting a lot of cities and only scratching the surface of each one, I decided to concentrate solely on the beautiful, intense city of Tokyo – I want to dig really deep.
I spent many weeks (and countless rolls of film) running 20km per day through every neighborhood this city has to offer. Not once have I used my digital camera - It only felt right to shoot analogue. This city deserves every inch of grain, you can’t help but take that extra moment to think about getting the perfect frame.
A city so full of culture that embodies its rich heritage into a modern and futuristic dress, can only be caught properly on analogue film.
I wanted to show how sometimes… even in Tokyo time stands still.
The old merges with the new. Black and white frames always transport a certain elegance, giving the character of something transported from the past.
This is my 'OLD FUTURE' series, specially produced for Biancissimo.
