Picture This: Streetwear And Friendship In Cape Town
I have always been interested and excited by subcultures, specifically streetwear. In early 2017 I bought a Pentax Espio and got into analogue photography, which is probably the most average thing you can say about yourself these days hey.
I don’t consider myself a photographer but for the past 26 years, I always felt the need for some sort of creative outcome. I flourish when surrounded by like-minded people that put a lot of effort into overcoming obstacles that almost every young creative struggle with nowadays. This story is dedicated to people I’ve met that constantly inspire me with their creativity, individuality, ambition and courage.
The perception of “Young and Lazy” might be a laid-back streetwear brand but owner and creative director, Anees Petersen, is one of the busiest and hardest working people I know. He has not only built a locally produced brand, but he has built a strong subculture in South Africa that speaks to so many. He is constantly growing and adapting and has recently opened up a pop-up shop in Woodstock, Cape Town.
I met Seraaj Semaar and shortly after Reagan Paulsen who own a brand called “Youth95”. Besides that, they are really good stylists as well. I look up to how effortlessly these two style their outfits on a daily basis and still stay true to themselves.
A few months ago I met Jade Ayla at a festival in Cape Town. We clicked and share many common interests. Jade is a freelance graphic designer and illustrator that has worked with the likes of Daniel Pacitti and many more. I am inspired by her independence and the ease with she dresses herself.
I met Luca Williams a few times while out at parties. When I got to know him better I acknowledged his interest in house music and his skills as a producer. Luca has his own unique style and isn’t scared to push his own aesthetic. Through Luca, I met his girlfriend, Summer Zoe Thompson, who is working as a model. Her down-to-earth attitude is juxtaposed by her sense of style. She is confident in mixing her wardrobe to create an effortless, fierce look.
