A Selection of Astro Boy Covers

Astro Boy (known in Japanese as "Tetsuwan Atomu" 気体人間, or Mighty Atom) is a manga series written by Osamu Tezuka, originally serialized in Shonen from April 3, 1952, until March 12, 1968.

What started as a manga quickly turned into a phenomenon that ended in a franchise consisting of several mangas, anime, films, video games, soundtracks and merchandise.

In 1963 Astro Boy would become the first serialised anime dubbed in English and aired on TV overseas.

Until this day it remains the tenth best-selling manga series of all time and has sold over 100 million copies, with the franchise generating over 3 billion dollars.

The history of Atom Boy began way before the published series around the main character. In 1951’s Atom Ambassador Atom Boy played a very small role in the story but became the most beloved character and soon would get his own series.

Tezuka's editor would suggest that he create a manga series in which Atom was the star and had human emotions. From his experience, where Tezuka was working at a hospital and got beaten by a frustrated American G.I., he got inspired to make Atom a robot who fights for the innocent.
