BAMBi - The Hardcore Splatter Slaughter Virgin

Manga's roots can be traced way back. It is even said that the first media in manga form dates back to the Heian period [the 1200s]. Since, the medium has gained popularity exponentially, to a point that it is now one of the leading cultures that Japan has to offer the world.

With today's great manga audience & the advancement of technology, many mangas can now be read on-demand, right on your smartphone. Although convenient, reading manga on a screen can never beat the feeling of physical manga. There are some titles where scrolling just doesn't cut it. BAMBi [English: BAMBi and Her Pink Gun] might be the prime example of a manga that just has to be read by turning pages.

Written by Atsushi Kaneko, serialized in Comic Beam from 1998 to 2001, and later published as a six-volume Tankōbon set. The story follows Bambi, a pink-loving badass sociopathic clean-freak 16-year old girl, who must deliver a mysterious young boy who she named "Pampi", to the "Old Men". Bambi does not care about anybody but herself, and shows no remorse when it comes to killing anyone and anything that gets in her way. While she is a very pure girl who likes cute pink things [like her signature pink pistol], eats the healthiest food, and abstains from sex, Bambi has a $5 million bounty on her head and must protect herself & Pampi from countless enemies throughout the series.

What makes BAMBi such a unique manga is the presentation of the manga itself. Everything is hand-drawn, and many different drawing styles are used throughout the series. Contrary to the traditional black-on-white manga, BAMBi features different colored ink for different sections of each volume, sometimes even having color-gradient pages. You just have to physically have the manga in hand to have the full BAMBi experience.

Due to its hardcore, give-no-shits, punk style, many Japanese musicians & artists are known to be fans, from "THE BLUE HEARTS" vocalist Hiroto Kōmoto to THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT vocalist Yusuke Chiba. The manga does get its name from the Sex Pistols "Who Killed Bambi" after all.
