Sabukaru Tokyo Cars - A Series by Sabukaru 004: Udai

Sabucars is a series featuring some of our favorite cars in Tokyo together with their owners.

For the 4th edition of Tokyo Cars, we met up with YouthQuakemember & creative Udai to talk about his car & his love for it.

On an autumn day, right around when the leaves started to turn yellow, we caught up with Udai by the Nakameguro Station, right along the Meguro River. The navy body with wood accents of his 1996 Nissan Cedric WY30 Wagon fit in perfectly with the fall atmosphere.

The Nissan Cedric is one of Japan's longest & most-produced high-end cars. Sales began way back in 1960, with the first generation Cedric, a 4-door sedan with some obvious American inspiration. The first-generation model was produced until 1965, and roughly 150,000 were sold. Udai's Cedric is a sixth-generation, which was produced from 1983-1999. The sixth-generation Cedric was the first to see a V6 engine, a step up from the L6 engine the Cedric had sported until then.

Apart from the wagon shown above, there was also a 4-door hardtop, sedan, and light van which saw production. Cedrics, which have been used widely in Japan as taxis, police cars, and training cars, had always rivaled the Toyota Crown, Toyota's take on the lux-sedan. Although the sixth-generation is popular today amongst fans, at the time it was greatly defeated by the Crown.

Udai bought his beautiful '96 Cedric about 2 years ago, from his friend & BoTT designer & director Teito. Ever since he saw Teito riding it, he fell in love with wagons & the navy and wood details on this particular Cedric.

Udai's passion for vintage cars has been around for a while, as his father used to race as a hobby. And it definitely isn't leaving any time soon.
