This Ain’t Hamtaro: Oruchuban Ebichu
When thinking about animated hamster series, Hamtaro is likely to be the first thing that comes to mind—if you’re normal.
Portraying an adorably fuzzy tale of friendship and adventure, Hamtaro is one of the most renowned and beloved hamster-themed anime/ manga of its time. With manga serialization beginning in 1991, Oruchuban Ebichu is another hamster-centred narrative that actually predates Hamtaro. While the characters appear slightly similar, you definitely wouldn’t want to get these two series confused.
Ebichu, the star of the show, is no ordinary hamster. While most hamsters spend their days spinning on wheels and munching on seeds, Ebichu lives a double life as a devoted housemaid for her single, late 20s, sex-crazed owner, known simply as "Office Lady." As Ebichu dashes around the apartment, juggling household chores and serving as an emotional support animal, the show delves into relatable topics with a side dish of satire.
From failed attempts at dieting to questionable relationship advice, Oruchuban Ebichu pushes the boundaries of what's deemed acceptable, embracing the absurdity of human behaviour with a wink. Its dark humour and biting wit resonate with those who appreciate the unconventional and revel in pushing societal norms to the brink.
Lending her voice to Ebichu is none other than the iconic Kotono Mitsuishi, famed for her portrayal of Sailor Moon and Evangelion's Katsuragi Misato. The idea to create an anime adaptation of Oruchuban Ebichu was actually first incepted on the set of Evangelion. Mitsuishi, often reading the manga between recording takes would be keeled over laughing at its content, urging her Evangelion set mates to have a look and share in the laugh. As a result, she was chosen as the anime's titular character and one episode of Evangelion even pays Ebichu homage, trading out Katsuragi Misato's favourite Yebisu Beer for an Ebichu instead.
Despite its cult following, Oruchuban Ebichu remains a niche phenomenon, destined to be cherished by those who revel in its unapologetic irreverence. Its uncompromising attitude and unorthodox narrative have cemented its place as a provocative gem.
