A Versatile Beast: The Mitsubishi Delica Star Wagon L300

The success story of the Mitsubishi Delica begins in 1968 when the van first entered production.

The word Delica is a combination of the words "delivery" and "car." Over the years many many different versions and generations of the Delica saw the light of day, but no other generation was as popular as the sci-fi looking third generation which was produced between 1986 to 1993.

If you talk about the Mitsubishi Delica nowadays, most enthusiasts will picture the '80s third-generation model. Known as Star Wagons were the passenger versions of the Delica. The third-gen comes with a traditional 4WD [four-wheel driving] system and its car-like unibody chassis with a tall stance make it easy to recognize. Another remarkable asset is the engine that is located right underneath the driver's seat in favor of a hoodless chassis.

The vans seem to have an endless range of options, configurations, engine choices, and trim levels. Some voices point out there were over a hundred variants of the L300 Delica. However, an easy classification would be the year the cars were produced in. The early models [1986–1990] and the late models [1991–1993]. They differ in the arrangements of headlights and the style of side windows [slide vs. pop-out].

Also, the roof could be exchangeable. You could choose between a low-roof or a high-roof-version. While the low-roof came with a sunroof, the high roof option could be chosen with the panoramic Crystal Lite roof for a better viewing experience from the rear passenger area. All Star Wagon models feature rain gutters to easily affix roof rack systems.

Furthermore, Mitsubishi had several unique options to add to the Delica, such as the Cool Box, a small fridge located on the floor between the driver and passenger, or a built-in karaoke machine in the back.
