Mecha Fans Rejoice: ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON
Video games come in different shapes and forms.
Whether you're into dating sims or FPSs, there's something for everyone. Of course, Japan is no stranger to hosting some of the greatest studios that have and continue to bring us otherworldly experiences and virtual playgrounds. Among them, stand tall for creating generation-defining, or better yet, genre-defining video games, which live beyond the pixels on our screens.
One such studio, FromSoftware, has a long and elaborate history. Most famous for its Dark Souls and the various SoulsBourne series, the Japanese developer has a reputation for developing some of the most challenging video games in the industry. However, FromSoftware has also had a hand in defining another genre. While an intricate history when it comes to the mecha genre, Armored Core is as relevant as any other series to be considered legendary.
Helmed by the acclaimed Hidetaka Miyazaki, Armored Core debuted on the first PlayStation in 1997. Fast-paced yet grounded in semi-simulation gameplay, players got to tackle missions and contracts in a post-apocalyptic world as a pilot. The catch: you get to build your own mecha. Notorious for hardcore gameplay and unfriendly customization options for newcomers, the Armored Core series caught the attention of gamers for generations to come.
A mainstay during the mecha game renaissance from a few years prior, the Japanese mecha game series grew a substantial fanbase. Yet, years have passed since we heard any news for the sequel to the last entry, Armored Core V: Verdict Day [2013]. Of course, not until recently.
A grueling decade since the last title, we were first treated with a surprise announcement from FromSoftware during The Game Wards 2022, breaking the internet with what fans of the Japanese publisher have been waiting for: Armored Core VI FIRES OF RUBICON.
A reboot of sorts, the upcoming title is set on a remote planet, Rubicon 3, where an alien substance has caused a catastrophe and a war among extra-terrestrial corporations to control it.
