Poliquant – The Tokyo-Born Rebel of Function
Brands stemming out of Tokyo have a certain flare and nuanced innovation that make them undeniably a pillar of youth and future-facing fashion.
It’s their ability to collide various cultures and niches together but still maintain a cohesive vision and identity that ensures that these Japanese brands reign supreme. One brand in particular harnesses this essence, effortlessly pulling together mode and street sophistication to produce stylish contemporary pieces embellished with functionality. This brand is Poliquant, headed up by Tokyo-born designer Junichi Sugita.
Growing up, Sugita was fascinated by street style and after a long history in the fashion industry working in Italy, he decided to use this fascination as a conduit into his own brand, Poliquant. Spending his time in his early days skateboarding, the brand acts as a voice of persistence and rebelliousness that stems from this culture. Utilising modern innovations with the use of functionality, the brand equips you with the gear able to tackle the harsh climate changes that Japan is known for.
We decided to put the garments to the test in this latest editorial, heading away from the stereotypical bright lights of Tokyo, and instead putting ourselves into the gritty and authentic streets that someone like Sugita would likely visit in his youth.
Founded in 2016, with the SS23 release Poliquant once again evolves the brand to become even more in tune with the current fashion vogues whilst never straying away from its own identity. For every staple style piece shown, we see an unorthodox and rebellious nature to them: baggy trousers with drawstrings becoming ¾ length and unique colouring, jackets with multifaceted usages and connecting layers, and traditional overshirts equipped with hidden pockets and distinctive forms. The collection is whole, allowing the wearer to piece together full uniforms as well as mix and match with a diverse choice of different fashion genres.
