Rebellious Youth for Art: the Ethereal Photography of Li Yu Xuan

This collaborative post between GATA and Sabukaru is part of an ongoing series between both magazines, exploring common grounds, undiscussed topics, and other eye-catching things.

Dark, luscious, sultry, and fluorescent is the recipe for the enchanting photographs of the skillful Li Yu Xuan. The electrifying pictures have gained quite some attention online from global and local fans.

Based in Taipei, Taiwan, Yu Xuan originally started photographing as a hobby alongside her main job as a tattoo artist @gladystatt. Investing as much talent and creativity in photography as tattooing, her art and style are deeply inspired by the 80s, 90s, and the comeback of Y2K. Musical genres like hyperpop and metal seem to have infiltrated her style as well.

Like dark flowers in the night, her art redefines fragility and femininity. The models she photographs have a scandalous yet innocent allure, and the sexual liberation and body autonomy discourse that are emitted through the picture are a source of empowerment for women, as all of Yu Xuan project’s are mutually collaborative. The 1998-born artist does not skimp out on creating an otherworldly ambiance. Exploring dark alleys and gloomy bathrooms, she creates alien and rebellious narratives of young love, freedom, and high school gangs. The addition of neon shadows, body art, and fisheye lenses amplify the obscurity and noise of it all.

It’s easy to recognize that Li Yu Xuan’s unprecedented eclecticism is a product of talent and passion. Creating a beautiful genre of cyber-grunge with a camera, her art resonates with young people everywhere.
