Soccer x Kung Fu = The Best Thing You'll Ever See - Shaolin Soccer
Have you ever wanted to play soccer, but also continue your practice in kung fu? Then Shaolin Soccer is the perfect movie for you.
Released in 2001, Shaolin Soccer is a film directed by Stephen Chow, who also plays the lead role, Takeshi Kitano style. It was the highest-grossing film in the region's history at the time, and most likely a good handful of you reading this have either seen it or seen some clips from it.
Not much explaining is needed of the film, as it speaks for itself, and is an absolute visual masterpiece. The film follows Sing, a former monk and master of Shaolin Kung fu, played by director Stephen Chow. Sing wishes to spread the martial art to modern society, but hasn't succeeded no matter how he tries. Sing then meets Fung, an ex-soccer star in Hong Kong, and they agree to make Soccer their next way to try and promote Shaolin kung fu.
After a series of events, Sing has a dream team of kung fu masters, Team Shaolin, and they begin to destroy their opponents with ridiculous kung fu x soccer skills. In their final match, they go head to head with Team Evil, whose members have been injected with an American drug that escalates all their powers.
The final match is pure gold, and an overall must-watch movie. Happiness, sadness, anger; while the movie may sound like an obscure comedy flick, it will for sure take you on an emotional ride. Regarding the over-the-top CG, director Stephen Chow says he got inspired by Captain Tsubasa, one of Japan's legendary soccer mangas.
